Florida Flow: Mat Chat with Bad Girls Yoga’s Erika McBroom
In the sun-drenched paradise of Palm Beach, Florida, yoga instructor Erika McBroom is redefining what a yoga class can be. At Bad Girls Yoga, she's helping to create an experience that's equal parts empowering, welcoming, and refreshingly fun. We sat down with Erika to learn more about her journey and discover why Bad Girls Yoga might be exactly what your practice needs.
The Bad Girls Yoga Difference: Community Meets Customization
How did you come across the opportunity to teach with Bad Girls Yoga?
When Erika McBroom first reached out to Bad Girls Yoga founder Gillian, she was already an established instructor with a passion for creating customized yoga experiences. "We hit it off immediately!" Erika recalls with enthusiasm. That initial connection sparked what would become a two-year journey of teaching specialized classes, including memorable bachelorette yoga sessions that blend traditional practice with celebratory energy, including our favorite Namaste then Rosé class.
Describe your class style. What can people expect when they attend your class?
For Erika, creating an environment where connection flourishes naturally is key. "My personal belief is that we all come to yoga to feel a deeper sense of connection with ourselves, and subsequently, we end up finding a deeper connection with others, especially in a class environment," she explains. This philosophy manifests in classes that strike a joyful balance between group dynamics and individual growth.
Classes unfold organically, beginning with gentle warm-ups and centering breathwork before moving into traditional sun salutations and optional challenging poses. "I like to include arm-balance or inversion challenges here and there," Erika shares with a smile. The sensory experience is equally thoughtful, with dynamic playlists keeping energy high and aromatherapy-infused savasana assists bringing each session to a deeply relaxing close.
What makes you proud to be a Bad Girls Yoga instructor?
"I am so proud to be a BGY teacher because of the wonderful community of yogis and teachers that we have! It is a warm and welcoming environment every time you walk into a Bad Girls Yoga Class, and most importantly, we know how to have FUN!"
Tips for First-Time Yogis
What would you say to someone feeling nervous about trying yoga for the first time?
For those who might feel intimidated by yoga, Erika offers reassuring wisdom: "Everyone starts as a beginner! Honor your body, and honor your limits. If the only pose you want to take during a class is Child's Pose or Savasana, that is okay."
Is there a common misconception about yoga you’d like to clear up?
Bad Girls Yoga’s judgment-free approach extends to all aspects of the practice, including addressing familiar concerns. "You can hold your personal religious beliefs and also practice yoga. Anyone is welcome to come to class!"
Your top tip for someone preparing for their first class?
Erika's top tip is refreshingly simple: "Bring a water bottle, and wear something that not only makes you feel good but also, most importantly, that can move with you!"
The Transformative Power of Practice
What's your favorite yoga pose, and how has yoga impacted your life?
When asked about her favorite pose, Erika's face lights up. "Lizard pose! It's extremely effective at opening up the hips, psoas, and glute muscles—areas that tend to hold a lot of tension—and it's also easy and fun to modify when needed."
This emphasis on modification and accessibility reflects Erika's broader philosophy about yoga's role in life. "Yoga is a lifelong journey for all of us, and it never really leaves you," she reflects. "My practice has evolved with me through every season of life, giving me a deeper sense of empathy, grace, and finding beauty in stillness and peace in the chaos."
What inspires you to continue teaching yoga to others?
"I love meeting new people and sharing the practice with others. I've met some of my very best friends through teaching yoga! It's inspiring to see how much personal empowerment and inner healing can be gained from a consistent practice."
