Nicci Howell: Teaching Yoga with Intention & Joy
Meet Nicci Howell, one of Bad Girls Yoga's skillful instructors bringing mindful movement and intentional breathing to clients in The Hamptons. With a teaching style that balances challenge with relaxation, Nicci creates transformative experiences that leave students feeling both energized and completely at peace. We sat down for an interview to learn more about her experiences and philosophy on yoga.
The Journey to Bad Girls Yoga
How did you come across the opportunity to teach with Bad Girls Yoga?
Nicci's path to teaching with Bad Girls Yoga began organically. "Someone recommended me to the owner and she reached out to me," she shares with a smile. Sometimes the best opportunities come through genuine connections and word-of-mouth recommendations from those who recognize authentic talent.
Yoga as a Life-Changing Practice
What does yoga mean to you? How has it impacted your life?
For Nicci, yoga isn't just a physical practice—it's served as a steady foundation and the origin of meaningful transformation. "Yoga has always been a part of my adult life. It's been a huge source of healing and better health," she explains. The impact has been far-reaching, touching every aspect of her wellbeing. "I am grateful I found yoga; my practice has improved my confidence, helped me improve my relationships, and given me a huge sense of inner peace."
What inspires you to continue teaching yoga to others?
This personal transformation is what drives her passion for teaching. "Knowing how much yoga has helped me inspires me to help others find 'their yoga', whatever that means to them," Nicci says. But the inspiration flows both ways; teaching continues to deepen her own understanding. "Teaching yoga also helps me deepen my understanding and master the practice more which I feel so lucky to be able to do."
Favorite Poses and Teaching Philosophy
What's your favorite yoga pose, and what do you love about it?
“Trikonasana, or Triangle Pose,” Nicci answers, lighting up with enthusiasm. “It's one of the first I mastered and I love it because you feel challenged but also relaxed at the same time. Your body is opening in several directions and it looks beautiful." This balance of challenge and ease perfectly captures her teaching focus.
Is there a common misconception about yoga you'd like to clear up?
"That to do yoga you need to be flexible! That is not true, yoga is for every kind of body, and everyone has to start somewhere, everyone is on their own journey." Her inclusive approach ensures that students of all levels feel welcome and supported.
The Nicci Howell Class Experience
Describe your class style. How do you structure the session and help clients relax?
Nicci's classes are carefully crafted journeys that "help you open your body up with intention, proper breathing and joy." Her sessions follow a thoughtful progression: "Students always start in savasana to find inner quiet, then students warm up and come to flow. There is always a cool down and you end with a long savasana so your body can rest and enjoy all the opening you created."
Music also plays a crucial role in creating the perfect atmosphere. "I love making great playlists," she notes, and the result speaks for itself: "when clients finish class, they feel like they have pushed their bodies but feel completely rested."
Advice for First-Time Students
What would you say to someone feeling nervous about trying yoga for the first time?
Nicci's guidance for anxious newcomers is refreshingly simple and encouraging. "I would say just let go of any expectations and just be yourself. Your teacher will guide you, but it's your practice, do your best and that's perfect, there is no judgement and everyone starts somewhere. Just enjoy and go where it takes you."
What's your top tip for someone preparing for their first class?
For practical preparation, her top tip is straightforward: "Avoid eating at least for an hour before, water is fine though!" This simple advice helps ensure students can move comfortably and get the most out of their practice.
